Sofia Coppola’s Intimate Portrait of a Fashion Icon, Marc Jacobs

Marc by Sofia is the latest documentary from acclaimed filmmaker Sofia Coppola, marking her first feature‑length foray into nonfiction cinema. Produced and distributed by A24, the film offers a deeply personal and unconventional look at the life and creative world of legendary American designer Marc Jacobs.

Rather than a traditional biographical documentary, Marc by Sofia eschews standard talking‑head interviews and scripted structure in favor of an immersive, behind‑the‑scenes journey. The film follows Jacobs and his team through the 12‑week process leading up to the Spring 2024 runway show, blending archival footage, candid conversations, and moments from his storied career—from his formative years at the Parsons School of Design to his influential tenure as creative director at Louis Vuitton.

The project also reflects the longtime friendship between Coppola and Jacobs, which stretches back to the early 1990s. Their rapport allows for intimate and honest insights into the designer’s creative approach, personal reflections, and the evolution of his aesthetic. Coppola’s signature visual style—marked by texture, mood, and nuance—gives the documentary a poetic, almost dreamlike quality that feels more like a cinematic letter than a conventional career retrospective.

Marc by Sofia premiered out of competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in 2025 and opens in select New York theaters on March 20, 2026, before expanding nationwide starting March 27, 2026.
