Catching the Dream: American Summer Brings Heart, Hard Work, and Family Values to the Big Screen
There is a specific kind of magic reserved for the summers of our youth—the ones defined by sun-drenched baseball fields, first crushes, and the quiet lessons that stay with us forever. Premiering in theaters September 4th, American Summer captures that timeless spirit, delivering an inspirational story rooted in family values, sharp focus, hard work, and the power of never giving up.
Written and directed by Michael W. Gray, the heartwarming coming-of-age film follows an adult Mikey, brought to life with nostalgic warmth by Steve Guttenberg, as he looks back fondly on one transformative season of his youth. For young Mikey (played by Logan Gray), that summer brought huge milestones: landing a coveted spot on the local travel baseball team, navigating the sweet awkwardness of meeting "the" girl—Young Kelly, played by Mia Talerico—and relying on the help of a hero puppy who might just save the day.
Yet beneath the lighthearted moments and ballpark laughs lies a story of true resilience. While chasing his dreams on the diamond, Mikey must also confront deep uncertainty at home as his U.S. Army father goes missing overseas. Guiding Mikey through these turbulent times is his Grandpa, played by Dan Lauria, who offers wisdom, steady support, and family values when they are needed most. Alongside him, Erinn Ruth stars as Erica, while Cullen Moss plays Eddie, Kobi Frumer appears as Chris, Maximus Virigili plays Buck and Callie Reese joins the talented ensemble shaping Mikey's world. Fast-forwarding to the present, Christie Brinkley shines as the adult counterpart to Mikey's lifelong love, Adult Kelly.
Instead of giving up when faced with hardship, Mikey finds strength in his community and his own unwavering focus. The film leans into the core truth that perseverance isn't just about winning games—it's about showing up for the people you love when life gets tough. Adding to the excitement on the field, real-life MLB legends Lee Mazzilli and Luis Sojo make special appearances, lending authentic big-league credibility to the movie's ballplaying scenes.
Produced by Michael W. Gray and Michael Cuomo, with Ann M. Gray co-producing, American Summer is a refreshing reminder of the values that hold us together: keeping your eye on the ball, leaning on family, and pushing forward no matter the odds.
Don't miss American Summer when it hits theaters nationwide on September 4th.
