Amber Uhler: The Heart Behind the Crown

Miss USA Miss Congenialty 2026 Winner Amber Uhler

For Amber Uhler, the meaning of a crown has never been limited to what happens on a stage. Named Miss Michigan USA 2026 and later honored with the Chelsi Smith Congeniality Award at Miss USA 2026, Uhler's journey represents something much bigger than pageantry. At 41, she arrived at Miss USA with years of personal transformation behind her—and a mission that has become deeply personal: helping prevent childhood drownings and educating families about water safety.

Uhler's commitment to drowning prevention is rooted in personal experience. She survived a non-fatal drowning as a child, an experience that would ultimately become an important part of the advocacy work she carries with her today. In 2022, she found herself in another critical moment when she recognized that a child was drowning and intervened to help save his life. That experience strengthened her determination to make water safety and drowning prevention an ongoing mission.

Today, Uhler uses her public platform to educate families about the importance of water safety and drowning prevention. Among her efforts is the Water Watcher Card, designed to encourage adults to take intentional responsibility for supervising children around water. Her message emphasizes that drowning prevention requires multiple layers of protection, including active supervision, barriers, swim lessons, properly fitted life jackets and CPR knowledge.

Her advocacy has also extended into efforts to improve access to swimming education for children and families. For Uhler, teaching children water competency isn't simply another charitable initiative—it is potentially life-saving education. That sense of service is an important part of understanding why her Miss Congeniality honor feels so fitting.

Congeniality is not determined by a judging score. It is an acknowledgment from the women who shared the experience with her. In an intensely competitive environment, Uhler was recognized by her fellow contestants for the qualities that exist beyond the runway: kindness, connection, encouragement and the ability to make others feel seen.

Her pageant journey itself has been another remarkable chapter. After transforming her own life and losing more than 170 pounds, Uhler pursued a dream she once might have considered impossible. She went on to compete successfully in the pageant world before representing Michigan on the Miss USA stage. But perhaps the most compelling part of Amber Uhler's story is that she has never treated the crown as the destination. She has treated it as a microphone.

Whether she is speaking about overcoming the limitations we place on ourselves, encouraging women to pursue their dreams later in life, or reminding parents that drowning can happen silently and within seconds, Uhler continues to use her platform to create awareness and inspire action. For Amber Uhler, Miss Congeniality isn't simply another title.

It reflects the heart behind the crown—and a woman determined to use her voice to help save lives.
